When did your company become an Astra partner?

Calvert Controls became part of the Orion Services Group in June 2021, the same time I started with Calvert Controls myself. I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of this journey since the beginning.

How has your company grown or evolved since joining Astra?

Calvert Controls has progressed considerably in almost every way. Our focus and motto has always been “people first. Now that we are part of the Astra Services Partner team, the definition of “people first” has been amplified exponentially. The training and resources Astra has made available to our team are boundless.  

In addition to training and development provided by Astra, with the guidance and expertise shared amongst fellow service companies within the Astra portfolio, Calvert Controls has been able to officially enter the plumbing service line and has more than doubled our plumbing division in the last year (2023).

What do you see as the biggest benefits provided by your company’s relationship with Astra Service Partners?

The most significant takeaway and benefit from being part of the Astra Service Partners portfolio is the network itself that all the service companies belong to. The camaraderie between all the sister companies within Astra has been amazing. We’re all working collectively for the same greater goal — which ultimately is growth and success within all our individual operating companies.

 We all work conjointly when needed or warranted. We don’t leave anyone behind, and we all want to see our neighboring OpCo teams succeed. Some of the most meaningful and significant relationships I have currently are those established and grown within the Astra network.

What message(s) would you give to a company considering joining the Astra Network?

For the founders, the owners and the leaders of companies who truly live for the development and growth of their teams — the future of your company and your teams’ lives become limitless when you decide to join the Astra network. I was lucky enough to begin my career at Calvert Controls at the same time Calvert Controls was joining Orion/Astra, and the journey has been nothing short of incredible.

How did you make the initial connection with Astra Service Partners?

Josh Bernstein with Orion contacted a Board Member of The Tustin Group. That started an open conversation, and things progressed quickly from there. We’re excited to be part of the Astra network.

During the fact-finding process, what messages did you hear from Astra that most influenced your decision to move forward? 

Astra is passionate about talent development and believes in servant leadership and local autonomy. They believe — as do we — that the people closest to the employees and customers should be running the business.

What do you see as the biggest benefits provided by your company’s relationship with Astra Service Partners?

Though we’re a new member of the Astra network, it’s clear that growth opportunities for our employees is a huge benefit. We can already see the value that comes with having a network of peers to collaborate with.

What message(s) would you give to a company considering joining the Astra Network? 

They do what they say and say what they do. We are a team of hard-working individuals with a passion for developing our people and becoming the leader in the HVAC service industry.

How did you make the initial connection with Astra Service Partners?

They reached out to us because they had identified Champion Industrial Contractors as the type of company they believed would thrive as part of their network. 

During the fact-finding process, what messages did you hear from Astra that most influenced your decision to move forward? 

They only invest in high-performing service-focused businesses. They emphasized the importance of having the business operate with autonomy.  Astra also wanted to keep the name of the business in place, which is critical for a business like ours that’s been serving customers throughout the central valley of California for 90+ years.

How has your company grown or evolved since joining Astra? 

In the first nine months since joining Astra, we experienced 20% growth in our service department and increased the volume of cross-discipline projects throughout all departments.

What do you see as the biggest benefits provided by your company’s relationship with Astra Service Partners? 

No matter where they are in the country, mechanical service companies face a lot of the same challenges. Often the solution that one company discovers would be applicable to the next company. 

At Astra, we are committed to collaboration. So we’re in constant communication with the other operating companies. That allows us to share ideas and learn from each other’s successes (and failures). Ultimately, it enables us to find productive solutions much quicker than would have otherwise been possible..

What message(s) would you give to a company considering joining the Astra Network?

It’s a lot of fun being part of a large network of businesses that have tremendous, high-quality people. Each company truly believes that the success of one member of the network is the success of every member of the network. We’re in this together.
